Hugh Jackman is letting the world know that it'd be "cool" to have Wolverine on The Avengers. He apparently doesn't read comic books. Why would he? He's super rich and seems like a relatively happy person.
The thing is, Wolverine has been a card carrying member of The Avengers for quite some time now. Unfortunately, Marvel currently does not have the rights to the X-Men or any X related stuff, so they aren't able to put X-Men and Avengers in the same film.
Get on this, Hugh Jackman! I'd love to see an adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis's New Avengers.
This was the re-grouping of the team after the cataclysmic events of Avengers: Disassembled, which saw the deaths of several major characters, including Hawkeye, Vision, and Ant-Man. This forced The Avengers to call it quits and each head off on their own.
The birth of the New Avengers is an unlikely team up, with the new team members either long retired, or never members in the first place. Sure, Captain America and Iron Man are there, but Bendis brings in Power Man, Spider-Woman, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Daredevil (barely), and The Sentry.
The opening story arc for the New Avengers works great as a film, because of the "fish-out-of-water" feel Bendis gives it. The first issue begins with Electro agreeing to break someone out of the super villain island prison, The Raft. It is agreed between him and a shadowy figure that now would be the best time, due to the demise of The Avengers.
On the Raft, Jessica Drew (Spider Woman) is a S.H.I.E.L.D. escort for Lawyers Foggy Nelson and Matt Murdock (Daredevil) and their bodyguard Luke Cage (PowerMan). Murdock and his team are there to give legal counsel to a prisoner. While they are deep inside the prison, Electro strikes. He doesn't free just one man, but instead uses a massive electrical explosion to free the entire super prison.
Peter Parker (Spider-Man) sees the commotion and decides to check it out as his alter-ego, running into Captain America upon arriving. Hundreds of super villains are now on the loose, and trying to escape the island prison.
Below, Murdock makes his way to the prisoner he was there to see, Bob Reynolds, AKA The Sentry.
Who is The Sentry? He was an amazing concept, turned into a great prank on Marvel comics fans. He was conceived as a "forgotten hero," being introduced as a middle aged man who once was a very powerful hero, but due to a life-altering event, was erased from everyone's consciousness. Marvel decided to do the same thing to the public, telling everyone that The Sentry was in fact a mildly used character from the 60's, long since forgotten. This April Fool's joke even included Stan Lee telling the public that he had created the character and forgotten about it. The Sentry was basically Marvel's version of Superman, having unlimited strength and power, but also a paranoid schizophrenic.
Murdock begs The Sentry for help. The group that came to the depths of the prison are now surrounded by super villains. Bob Reynolds is afraid of the power he holds, but the hero inside of him can't bear to watch these people perish. Just as everything is looking terrible for our rag-tag group, The Sentry appears to save them all. When the team reaches the surface, Iron Man appears to help clean up.
In their total assessment of the breakout, Iron Man and Captain America figure out that roughly 42 super powered villains escaped during the battle. Cap tells Iron Man that they should think about putting a team together. More importantly, the team that fought against almost 100 crazy villains the night before.
Cap approaches them all to join him in hunting down the people responsible for the breakout at The Raft, and with the exception of Daredevil, they all say yes.
After shaking down Electro, they find out that the man they are looking for is Karl Lykos. Lykos has a special ability that allows him to absorb a person's life force, which allows him to turn into a humanoid pteranodon. When in that form he goes by the name Sauron.
Sauron has escaped to The Savage Land, which is a secret dinosaur jungle located at the south pole. The New Avengers jump in one of Tony Stark's experimental quinjets and head out.
Upon arriving, the team is violently attacked by a giant T-Rex. While in that fight, Wolverine emerges from the shadows to help out, but is immediately taken down by Spider-Woman.
After defeating the T-Rex, and after Wolverine heals up a bit, he reveals that he too is there to stop Lykos. It is agreed that they should work together from that point on. The New Avengers team is complete.
From there they are captured, tortured, and have plenty of battles with larger that life beasts.
This plot has what it takes to be a major blockbuster. Superheroes? Check. Mega team up? Check. Big ass Dinosaurs getting leveled by Captain America? Check. Sorry Jurassic Park, but you got nothing on this.
So, Hugh Jackman, if you're going to openly ask for an Avengers/Wolverine dream team, start with this story. I'm not sure who could say no to this. Also, you might want to throw Sony some love to get Spider-Man and Electro in on this as well.
