The beginning of 2013 saw the city of Chicago author several stories of pain and mindless violence. This year, it seems there are many citizens out there that want to help co-write an alternate, more positive ending for the Windy City.
Let me introduce you to DeMario Trent and the Neighbors Insurance Crusade. DeMario is on a mission to help make sure 10,000 children and young adults in Chicago (particularly in African-American communities) are covered under life insurance policies by the end of 2014. His ultimate goal is to see this number reach 100,000 by 2020
As we saw in 2013, there is an alarm rate of violent crimes ending in death within the city limits. Most of the victims of these crimes happen to be African-American children. Majority of these children and young adults were not covered by any form of life insurance, leaving their families with even more strife to take into account outside of dealing with the loss of a loved one.
According to DeMario, it was tragic death of 7 year-old Heaven Sutton in 2012 that sparked him to start this movement:
So, in the summer of 2013 Mr. Trent embarked on a journey to convince parents and guardians to set up some type of life insurance coverage for their loved young ones, if not through him, through another organization. DeMario works with churches and other communal organizations to help spread knowledge to the communities. He believes the biggest hurdle in educating parents on this subject is breaking them out of their current mindsets.
DeMario can be seen working feverishly in many South Side and West Side communities in Chicago, trying to get his message out, often times using a local Starbucks or coffee shop as his temporary office. He does not follow a firm set of working hours, he just likes to make sure that he sets aside enough quality time for his own family, a commodity that he is well aware of its value.
