2014 Fall TV Review: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 Premiere
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. started off as a show I wasn't very fond of. Now it is must see TV for me, and guess what...it's back!
Also, SPOILERS!!! I only go into the first 20 minutes of the show, and there is a lot of things that happen in that short amount of time.
The season premiere, episode #201 "Shadows," starts with a flashback of the World War II Howling Commandos busting up some Nazis and securing some sort of alien artifact. Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Dum Dum Dugan (Neal McDonough), and Morita (Kenneth Choi) are leading the raid (A quick reminder that an Agent Carter TV series is in the works, no doubt). They seal up the item, tag it with "S.S.R. 084," and let the audience know that this will be used later.
Now, in the present, there is a meeting between Xena, Warrior Princess and Glenn Gulia regarding the whereabouts of a certain alien artifact (that escalated quickly) with a folder of documents about "S.S.R. 084." Our heroes are hiding in the shadows, listening in to the conversation. We find out that Agent Hartley (Lucy Lawless's actual character name) is the highest bidder on the intel, and that Agent Browning (Matthew Glave, not Glenn Gulia from the Wedding Singer. My bad.) worked in a classified S.H.I.E.L.D. warehouse containing loads of interesting gadgets.
A dude runs through, kills Agent Browning, then snatches the folder. The S.H.I.E.L.D. team jumps into action, but big bad is unstoppable, crashing out the window while bullets just bounce off of him.
Not really knowing who was bad or good, we are now shown that Hartley was working for Coulson (Clark Gregg) to track down rogue agents and tech, and our heroes, Skye (Chloe Bennet), Agent May (Ming-Na Wen), and Agent Triplett (B.J. Britt) were hiding as back up, on the off chance that something went wrong. Hartley calls Coulson to update him, and he orders them to "go dark."
Look who's calling the shots now!
We are given some quick news footage, with General Talbot (Adrian Padsar) letting us know that S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are fugitives, and that they "deserve to be tracked down and punished."
So the crew is still in bad shape.
The bulletproof bad dude is name dropped as Carl "Crusher" Creel, known to comic nerds as "The Absorbing Man."
Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) seems to be feeling some negative side effects from his and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) near death experience in last season's finale. His injuries have hindered his work as a scientist, making him lose focus on the tasks at hand.
Agent Ward (Brett Dalton) is locked up, and still creepy crazy for Skye. Apparently, Creel was reported dead years ago, and the only link they have is with Ward.
Patton Oswalt is back! I hope he stays on as a regular.
The rest of the episode goes into overdrive with action and spoilers, so I'll keep it simple.... It was good.
Things are lining up for the show. It seems like they have some new team members with Agent Hartley's crew, but they do a poor job of giving us any information on them. That is, unless they think that quips and small amounts of screen time are a great intro to new characters that we are supposed to care about.
Overall, some pretty great stuff happens in this episode. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. seems to have kept its momentum from the end of last season, keeping this show at the top of my "Must Watch" list. It will be interesting to see where they go from here, with Hydra still being active and S.H.I.E.L.D. still struggling after the events in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
If you did give up on it last season (like I almost did), but loved The Winter Soldier, you should give Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. another shot.
