#QuickBlurb 2014 Fall TV Preview: 7 Best Returning Characters
Howdy...um...that didn't fell right, let me try that again.
Welcome to QuickBlurb's first foray into previewing this year's fall television line-up. Before we dig into the unknown, I find it best to help us remember what, or rather, who will give us comfort as summer comes to a close and we turn back into filthy couch potatoes.
This list has changed drastically from last year's list. Only two characters from last year made the list, which is kind of odd because most of the same shows are still represented. Ah well, like eating a White Castle Crave Case with extra onions after a long $2 pint night at your local bar, shit happens.
Same rules apply from last year, so let's get to it, shall we.
7. Al Capone, Boardwalk Empire (played by Stephen Graham)
One of our 2 returnees from last year's list. Al is too ruthless not to be on this list. He's funny, reckless, and has a short fuse; all ingredients for a great character. He dropped one spot from last year because he wasn't featured as prominently last season as he was on previous, but with Boardwalk scheduled to fast forward to the Great Depression for its' final season, I'm sure that will change.
6. Ron Swanson, Parks & Recreation (played by Nick Offerman)
Our second returnee also dropped a few spots from number 3 last year. That is because Ron had a kid and grew somewhat of a heart. Not enough of a heart to miss the list, but we did see a softer side to the man who moonlights as Duke Silver.
5. Rodney Ruxin, The League (played by Nick Kroll)
Replacing Raffi as the lone representative from The League is his brother-in-law, Ruxin. Raffi got a little too odd for me last season, and Ruxin upped his aura of dickishness to legendary levels. If your goal in life is to look down on others and savor their shortcomings in life, then you need to do an in-depth character study of this sarcastic prick. Take notes.
4. Gina Linetti, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (played by Chelsea Peretti)
We broke down barriers with this year's list. Gina is our first lady character on the list. She delivers each and every one of her lines with hilarious precision. She has a mild case of nacissism and is unapologetic about it, but in cool way, not in a dickish way. Grouped in an ensemble with a bunch of better known stars, Peretti's character often shines the brightest.
3. Winston Bishop, New Girl (played by Lamorne Morris)
Nick and Jessica were a little too cute-sie with their boyfriend/girlfriend thing, Schmidt's character was depressed for most of last season, and Coach struggled to find his niche upon his return to the cast. Winston took advantage of all this by going bat-shit crazy week after week. I loved every minute of it.
2. Peter Prentice, The Mindy Project (played by Adam Pally)
With the constant tease and then actual culmination of a hook-up between Mindy and Dr. Danny Castellano, and fattening of Dr. Reed's stomach leading to the flattening of his ego, The Mindy Project's audience was at risk of losing the douche bag/selfish prick element. In walks in Adam Pally's Peter Prentice frat boy with a PhD character, and all is right in the world. He was kind of injected in the mix out of nowhere, but he made me a fan in no time. His views on the the world through his bottom-of-a-beer bong shaded glasses are just bottom line funny.
1. Red Reddington, The Blacklist (played by James Spader)
With The Office's Robert California, I became James Spader tolerant. With Red Reddington, I became a full blown Spader-holic. Red is intense, yet calm. Diabolical, yet collected. Evil, yet good. Spader plays every spectrum of Red Reddington with the precision of a thespian surgeon, which is exactly why he tops this year's list.
Welp, there you have it. I'm not going to make any predictions for who's going to make the list next year, considering the fact that the three sad sacks I put my hopes in last year to make this year's list failed to do so. Maybe I'm a jinx. Who knows, who cares? Anyways...you're welcome
